Voice Synthesis

Voice Synthesis is a menu driven software system for synthesizing the dynamic characteristics of voice production. It can be used in voice therapy or perceptual studies of vocal behaviors. The synthesis program allows the user to control the duration of the voice sample, fundamental frequency, intonational (pitch) contour, fundamental frequency flutter, the number of formants (3-5), the frequency and bandwidth of each formant, the shape of the glottal source, and the amount and shape of the glottal noise. These parameters can be used to produce reasonably normal sounding vowels while manipulating features of the voice source. In therapy, the clinician may want to produce a stimulus token that is similar to the vocal characteristics presented by the patient (for example, a very breathy voice). By synthesizing a voice sample that is a little less breathy, the clinician provides the patient with an attainable target. Through a process of successive approximations, the patient can gradually produce more normal sounding vowels. The synthesizer can provide the stimuli for this model-matching approach to clinical treatment. Voice Synthesis can create wave files that can be exported to other programs, such as Real Analysis, Speech Training and Vocal Assessment and treated like any other voice sample.
